Whoa! Someone made this great remix of our most recent Fray album cover artwork. I can’t find the source, but if anyone knows let us know so we can credit them.

TURN IT UP LOUD!
The Fray Covers Album (click to see full-size)
We recently made this album cover with The Fray. They had self-produced an EP album of covers—which is one of my favorite things they’ve recorded—and they asked us to design the album cover.
The artwork concept we pitched is a fairly obvious pun — covers album, all covered up, get it? — but we had a ton of fun over a long weekend making it, and really love how it came out. Along with Ben (the drummer) and a few friends’ help, we wrapped literally every piece of equipment they own in their studio with white vinyl and built it all up into the background for the cover shot. We worked with photographer Michelle Wysocki to capture the final composition.
Check out the short time lapse video below that shows us making the whole thing and features their (wicked) cover of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Maps.
In honor of the Looper Soundtrack release on iTunes today, here’s a sneak peek at one spread from the 24-page making-of booklet we designed for the release.
Behold, the physical version of the album!

See you on the road this month!

(p.s. I feel I should mention that the album includes a cover of Pure Imagination from Charlie & The Chocolate Factory :)
In honor of The Fray’s new album release today, we thought we’d make a little GIF of some of the many early concept designs we discarded for the cover.
Hey, remember when we built five-foot-tall fluorescent tube type subway signs for The Fray?

Looks perfect! I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. (Nor should you — if you like the art we made, I can only say wait until you hear the music :)
As much as I enjoy web design work, I really love laying out for print… all the processes and procedures and tolerances: templates, bleeds, cuts, safety, proofs, rich blacks, spot colors, barcodes, spines, stickers and shrinkwrap. It’s painstaking and unforgiving, but translating an abstract concept into an image, and then turning that image into an actual thing that can be touched is just still so rewarding.
